In the beginning of 2005, Café Atchafalaya was acquired by Timothy Howard who had fallen in love with the building and its history. The ideal of restoring the Café to a welcoming neighborhood eatery would not be an easy goal but one filled with unforeseeable obstacles. Even while dealing with insurmountable odds, Timothy not only improved the Café but did so with an artful eye and true dedication towards those it hosts today. Only a few months after reopening, an unfortunate incident occurred involving a random high speed police chase that ended with a stolen SUV being driven into the Café at 3am. Timothy was severely distressed by the start of his new endeavor. While the situation shocked the quiet neighborhood, it was overshadowed by the historical events that occurred in late August. Determined to restore the Café to the quant uptown eatery it one was, Timothy has improved and added to the lush history. While maintaining the character and quarks of the Café, Howard has combined history with redemption by protecting the workmanship of years past and artfully adding warm colors and local art that reflect true New Orleans flavor. After months of improvements that covered every aspect, from the structure to the gorgeous craftsmanship shown in the entrance, Café Atchafalaya was re-opened as a Southern ~ Creole neighborhood restaurant. As the years have passed, it has garnered awards accolades from publications, food critics, and those who dine with us. Today delicious and diverse dishes from head chef Rolita Goodrich and warm southern hospitality from the whole Café family has garnered acclaim with both locals and travelers who desire an authentic southern welcome. As Café Atchafalaya sits, tucked away on the corner of Laurel and Louisiana, inside everyone involved contributes to the evolution and attitude of a New Orleans’ local landmark.
